A hard fork is a protocol upgrade that is not backward compatible. This means every node (computer connected to the Bitcoin network using a client that performs the task of validating and relaying transactions) needs to upgrade before the new blockchain with the hard fork activates and rejects any blocks or transactions from the old blockchain. https://dr-stretchy.com/ The old blockchain will continue to exist and will continue to accept transactions, although it may be incompatible with other newer Bitcoin clients.

This fragmentation could one day threaten the stability of the wider financial system – and some emerging market and developing economies are already being “materially affected” by the substitution of currency for crypto assets, according to the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
In the ashes of the 2008 global financial crisis, a mysterious person or group of people going by the name Satoshi Nakamoto created Bitcoin. Their aim was a more decentralized world, free from intervention by centralized institutions such as central banks. How a tool is adapted generally reflects the principle, not the tool, however – and the irony Satoshi’s original libertarian followers might have to swallow is that one of the most powerful centralized institutions in the world, PBOC (People’s Bank of China) – China’s central bank – could be adopting Bitcoin’s underlying technology, blockchain, to digitalize the RMB.
Blockchain has shown some technical limitations and deficiencies. At the end of 2017, due to deteriorating transfer speed and growing transaction costs, many individuals turned to Bitcoin Cash, resulting in a fluctuation of the Bitcoin price. At the same time, faced with threats such as quantum computing – a new generation of machines that experts say could crack Bitcoin by 2027 – miners and the companies involved in blockchain technology are busy searching for solutions. A company called Hcash has used ring-signature cryptography to attempt to overcome the quantum risk, and is confident it can protect Bitcoins long-term.
“A stablecoin’s value may, for example, be pegged to the value of a sovereign currency such as the US dollar, other crypto-assets or commodities, or supported by algorithms,” the World Economic Forum’s Digital Currency Governance Consortium White Paper Series says. “Depending on the effectiveness of the stabilization mechanism and backing, the digital currency may or may not hold a stable value relative to its reference asset.”
The threat of capital flight remains a priority for the PBOC as the Chinese economy recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic, especially as China launches its “common prosperity” campaign. Former PBOC advisor Li Daokui has warned that the relatively fast economic recovery of the US could fuel greater capital flight, as Chinese residents may be inclined to purchase assets in the US for greater financial security.
The primary aim of financial regulation is to support financial stability, transparency, protection for consumers and investors and a level playing field for different market participants. Future regulation should support the criteria outlined in this paper and summarized in the table below:
Future of cryptocurrency
This can be seen with the launch of Ethereum 2.0 and the move from a proof of work (PoW) consensus to a proof of stake model (PoS). PoW refers to the decentralized system that powers the Bitcoin network, with the model requiring huge amounts of energy to validate transactions and mint new tokens. But PoS allows miners to mine and validate block transactions based on the amount of coins that they hold.
The FCA and Bank of England have also proposed regulations for stablecoins. Stablecoins are designed to be more stable in value than cryptocurrency by having their value tied to that of another asset. Another factor to consider is that crypto miners are increasingly using excess electricity that would otherwise go to waste. The emergence of crypto mining farms has soaked up extra capacity and prevented the waste of unused renewable energy.
Japan is open to crypto use, recognizing it as a type of money and as legal property. As such, crypto and yen transactions are both managed by the country’s Financial Services Agency, and citizens of the country are free to own or invest in crypto. The country has recently toughened its rules on sharing customer information between crypto exchanges, in an attempt to tackle money laundering.
